Meeting our new guy!

The birth of a new baby is such a happy and momentous occasion. Luke and I feel blessed to have such great family and friends to share the day with! We loved all our visitors to snuggle our sweet Beckett Allen!

Brotherly Love

Braxton Cole has been so sweet during this whole pregnancy. He knows that he is getting a baby brother (brudder) who is currently in mommy's tummy and who is coming out in March. Of course I am not sure that he truly understands what this means but its still sweet to hear.
Braxton loves to kiss and hug his brudder(my belly). He is also extremely interested in playing doctor now which means performing ultrasounds and giving shots. During bedtime stories, Braxton frequently requests, "I lay on Beckett?" when he wants to snuggle and lay with me as he falls asleep.

We are lucky to have great family support because Luke's mom was able to keep Braxton on delivery day and then bring him to the hospital to meet his baby brother after nap. Braxton was excited to look at his baby brother through the nursery window while he was getting a bath and getting dressed.
He was a little nervous when he got to our room and mommy was in the hospital bed but he warmed up quickly and was climbing all over the bed and my sore tummy. Ha! Braxton loved his present from Beckett and when Beckett came back to the room from the nursery it was love at first sight. He was excited to look at Beckett, kiss Beckett "on the lips", and hold him! He was not sure that he wanted other people to hold Beckett and he was quick to say, "put Beckett back in hims bed!"

Braxton stayed and visited for a little while and was excited to spend the night with grandma so there were no tears when he wasn't able to spend the night with his mommy, daddy, and baby brudder.

Beckett Allen is here

Beckett Allen Hill was born at 11:41AM weighing in at 8lbs. 6oz. and measuring 20.5 inches in length. Beckett was born with a strong set of lungs, great color, and an appetite!!!

C-section Day....3/3/15

On the night before the scheduled c-section I was not allowed any food or drink after midnight. They also should have added no sleep because of course you are not able to truly sleep well when you are anxious and excited.
We had to be at the hospital Tuesday morning at 9:00AM which was great because it gave me some snuggle time with Braxton before we left. Our C-section was scheduled at noon but Dr. Collins was running ahead of schedule so into the operating room we went at 11:15.

A C-section is terrifying because lets face it, all surgery is scary and a C-section is a surgery in which the patient is awake. Overall though, this C-section was so much more mommy/baby centered than Braxton's birth.
Of course Luke was right beside me but with this delivery we were allowed to bring our camera into the operating room, a labor and delivery nurse took pictures for us, and Beckett was allowed skin-to-skin time immediately after delivery while my doctor was still finishing up with my surgery. After delivery, Luke went with Beckett to the nursery and they were both back with me in the recovery room within 10 minutes!  After my 2 hours in the recovery room and after Beckett had adequate time to nurse we were transferred to our room so Beckett could meet all his family!

Counting down the days!!

Nursery is done. Clothes are washed. Baby gear is out of storage. Car seat is installed. All we need now is baby boy #2! By about 36 weeks I was ready for Beckett to make his appearance. It was around this point that it started getting difficult to get up and down from the floor which is a crucial aspect of a pediatric physical therapists job.
Beckett's favorite place to hang out was always underneath my rib cage on the right side and when I say always....I mean always. Towards the end of this pregnancy you could safely bet that when you saw me I would have a hand on top of my belly pushing Beckett's booty down to provide pain relief. After work, getting horizontal was a necessity to get relief from the stabbing pains in my right side.

Since Braxton was delivered by a c-section, Beckett's arrival would most likely be the same way. So it was our job to pick his birthday; a task which I totally over thought. I eventually settled on Tuesday March 3rd (3/3/15). This allowed me to have Monday off work and hang out with Braxton Cole all day. His last day as a only child was spent snuggling, playing with the train table at Dilly Dally's, and going on an ice cream date.

During the last several weeks of pregnancy, I secretly was praying that I would just go into labor....mostly because of all the stabbing pains Beckett was providing but also to possibly avoid the recovery time associated with a c-section. Each week I was disappointed when my doctor confirmed that no progress had been made. On 3/2/15 I did experience contrations 4 minutes apart for apporoximately 3 hours but then they stopped as quickly as they had started. Oh well, C-section it would be!!!

Here is the only pregnancy picture that I have this time around. I did a terrible job documenting the growing bump but for some reason I do not think that Beckett will be upset. I can't imagine him wanting to look through pictures of his mom's belly. Ha

Toddler Chronicles.....Potty training!!

When preparing for baby #1 the focus is on the nursery, the registry, the baby book, the showers. When preparing for baby #2 the focus is all on helping baby #1 adjust!!
In the Hill household this was no different. The months leading up to Beckett's arrival were all about preparing Braxton to be "big!" We started the process by evicting him from his crib but we sugar coated it by making a big "to-do" about his big boy room! He made the transition from crib with rails to twin size bed flawlessly in October and didn't discover that he could exit his twin size bed independently until January! Now Braxton consistently wanders across the house 1x per night and crawls into our bed. We proceed to scoop him up and take him back to his own bed and lay with him until he falls back asleep. Obviously getting up in the middle of the night isn't ideal but the way I see it is that Braxton will not want to cuddle forever so I should take advantage now!! Morning time cuddles are another story all together and I fully expect Braxton to come and snuggle in our bed once the sun is awake!!
Big boy bed with no paci!
Next we knew we needed to overcome the paci...Braxton had long ago given up his Paci except during nap and bedtime but he really relied on it during those times. Our plan was just to not replace pacifiers after they were lost or destroyed from toddler chompers. Christmas Eve morning, we were all snuggling in bed. Braxton had his very last paci in hand. Luke and him were rough-housing as usual and Braxton ended up biting a hole in said paci. He immediately looked at us with sad eyes and said "paci broken,""you get me another one?" I of course teared up because how sad is that. We told him no and that was that. For another month Braxton would attempt to suck on his broken paci at bedtime for 1-2 sucks and then would hand it to us and say "it's broken, you take it."
Last but not least Braxton needed big boy underwear instead of his diapers. I personally had no intentions of conquering this before Beckett's arrival but daycare had other plans. Ha
After an exceptionally hard week at daycare with hitting and pushing and yelling, daycare called and said Braxton was not being challenged enough in his toddler classroom and he needed to transition into the preschool room. The catch was that Braxton could not transition up until he was potty trained:(  Braxton surprised us all and did great with the transition. Accidents still happen and will increase when baby #2 arrives I assume but as of January, Braxton is in big boy undies all day everyday. Diapers are still used at home during naps and overnight.
How cute are tiny boxer briefs!?!?
First outing in undies....Trampoline park!

What was our method of choice for potty training?? Well we pretty much flew by the seat of our pants....no books, no blogs, no true plan. Luckily is worked for us! We started by setting a timer and taking Braxton to the potty every 15 minutes. We allowed him to continue wearing his diaper but after each visit to the bathroom we offered big boy undies and talked about how "cool" they were. Braxton was resistant for the first 6 hours and then agreed to the undies. Once he donned the undies there was no turning back in our minds.....diapers were no longer an option. We continued to utilize the timer for the rest of the day and then sent Braxton to daycare in undies the next morning! Daycare set a timer for him throughout the next week. We increased the timer increments to 30 minutes the next weekend and by the end Braxton was pretty successful!! PeePee was an easier feat than poop. Braxton has only had 1-2 poop accidents but he is having a little trouble with constipation saying that "my poop hurts me" or "my poop too hard to get out." We have added juice into his diet which has helped and he has gotten more confident with sitting on the potty!

Overall, I feel super accomplished. We succeeded with the big boy trifecta...no crib, no paci, no diapers!! Whew! Now to start over with baby #2!!
